Musings from the 3rd floor

My roomie has quite the full dance card here on the 3rd floor in bed D. Her entourage is back and it appears they are very angry about the email her mom didn’t get from the contractor. So angry that they need to shout on the phone about the missing email Godammit. Her vomiting continued

the search for non-toxic makeup continues

Anyone who knows me well, knows I always love having a new project! Clean closet? Check. Clear out refrigerator with expired condiments? Check. Organize medicine cabinet? Check, check. In my quest for non-toxic home cleaning products, personal care products and makeup, I’ve been pulling each item out and examining the labels for ingredients. Besides Paraben,

the debate about parabens

Throughout all the research I’ve been doing with regards to non-toxic body products, cosmetics and makeup, the most-hotly debated ingredient seems to come from the family of parabens. What are are Parabens? Parabens are chemicals which are used in cosmetics and body care products used to prolong  or enhance shelf-life. Sounds fine, right? Except that

making changes

As we embark on what seems an endless journey of “the waiting game” – waiting for test results that will determine the best course of treatment moving forward, I’m taking a “time out” from my CJ just to enjoy the Winter Break with the kids and M. We took the guys to the 49ers game

ordering from the cancer menu

Navigating the myriad of doctor’s appointments, lab results, pathology reports and potential treatment plans has become a full-time job.  There’s no doubt in my mind that this takes precedence over all my other commitments and items on my trusty “to-do list,” but what makes it even more time-consuming and quite honestly overwhelming, is the abundance

teaching empathy

Watching our new fave obsession Survivor tonight with the guys, as one of the recently voted-off contestants poignantly shared her sadness at leaving the game, we experienced a game-changing moment ourselves. Z: “Charlie’s eyes are all teary and watery! Ha ha ha.”  C: “Shut up Zach.” JG: “Zach, don’t be a jerk. Leave your brother alone.

4 weeks post surgery update

It’s been exactly 4 weeks since my bilateral mastectomy. That’s 28 days of being a “small breasted” person after nearly 28 years of being a “bigger breasted” person. I’ve swapped my D’s for A’s (or at least temporarily) and I have to say I’m getting more comfortable with the physical changes of my new shape.

re-entry

When I was in college cramming for finals, loaded up on caffeine, experiencing major sleep  and four-food-group deprivation, (Dorritos count as dairy, right? ‘Cuz they’re Nacho Cheese?)  you’d think I’d opt for super comfy, lounge-y attire like leggings and Pategonia fuzzies (this was the 90’s), throw my hair in a scrunchy and head out to
